About Department

   The college was originally established as Wasudeo Arts College at Wardha in 1935 which was later on shifted to Nagpur in 1942 and renamed as National College. In 1949, Shri Shivaji Education Society, Amravati took over the college and once again renamed in 1951 as Dhanwate National College after Shrimant Dadasaheb Dhanwate who wholeheartedly donated to the society. In 1960 Commerce, Arts and Science streams came into being. In 1967 Science stream was separated and independent Science College came to be established.
   The Department of English offers under faculty of Arts and Commerce the subjects like compulsory English, supplementary English, English literature etc. It also runs the PG course in English and is recognized Ph.D. Research Centre of the Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Nagpur.
   It also runs short term Certificate Courses of Basics of Communication Skills in English for the students in general. Our department also has good academic record of Meritorious Students from University.
   As regards historical view of the department, this department has generated various luminaries in the field of education, social, political, judiciary, sports, bureaucracy, cultural etc. The department has made good progress in every aspect of education, academics, research and extension activities,

Legacy of the Department:
  • Mrs. S. Sen: The first former Head of the dept. from 1935 to 1960. Contributed to the overall development of the department.

  • Dr. M.L. Mahajan – (1955 to 1981):Research area “A Critical Study of Tennessee William’s Plays.”

  • Dr. N.B. Hamza (1960-1997) : 4th order of Merit in M.A. (Eng.) 1959, Scholar in American Poetry. Research on “A Critical Study of the Poetry of Langstion Hughes (1989), Khalil Gibran (1990), taught to the classes for minorities, conducted by Nagpur University.

  • Y.W. Wadaskar (1961 to 1992) :Principal from 1983 to 1985, short story writer & critic in Marathi, Pioneer of Jansahitya Movement in Marathi Literature. Pivotal Force in organizing Jansahitya sanmelan in 1984 in DNC Campus. Eminent poetess and writer Amrita Pritam presided, K.A. Abbas, painter Imroz renowned writer attended the conference.

  • P.N. Chandekar (1961 to 1985): Noted playwright & theatre personality, Authoritive Speaker on J. Krishnamoorthy

  • Mrs. Z.H. Lamak (1962 to 1995) :Rendered service for the development of the department.

  • M. Aslam (1964 to 1995):Read papers at Kolhapur, Madras and Hyderabad Contributed to the development of NCC Unit. Taught to the classes to minorities, conducted by Nagpur University.

  • S.Yunus (1964 - 1992) :5th order of merit in MA (English) 1964 Bilingual, wrote in English and Urdu

  • B.S. Khodaskar (1964 to 1998) : well known visiting Faculty at various places. Taught to the classes for competitive examinations.

  • Dr. Om Biyani (1993 to 2000) : Scholar in Indian writings in English, Bilingual, writes in English and Hindi, well known poet, critic and essayist. His research is on “ A Critical Study of Indian Short Stories in English.”

  • Dr. Mrs. Bipasha Ghoshal (1993-2023): Specialization in Linguistics and Phonetics, Research supervisor.

  • Dr. Mrs. Anuradha D. Kherdekar (1998-2021):Specialization in American Literature,

  • Dr. M. S. Wankhede (2000-2021):A creative writer Specialization in British Literature, Sociolinguistics, Dalit Literature, Renowned visiting faculty with the Department of Linguistics, RTMNU, Dual Ph.D. in English Literature and Linguistics. Ph.D. on Mathew Arnold’s Culture and Modernity,

  • Dr. Ratnakar D. Bhelkar (2000-2020): Bilingual creative writer, Recipient of the Nagpur University’s Best Teacher Awarded, Ph.D. on Science Fiction, D. Lit. Rashtrasant Tukadoji’s Gramgrita.

Presently the Department is now working to grow in all areas, with strong regular and CHB faculty members under the guidance and headship of Prof. K.K. Askar.
