   The college was established at Wardha in 1935 and shifted to Nagpur in 1942. It was adopted by Sri Shivaji Education Society, Amravati in 1949-50 and named National College.
   Department of Physical Education and Sports has been functioning since its inception. It has a very rich tradition as its students have excelled and their achievements have brought glory to the college in the field of sports.
   We are very happy to mention here that the college won three consecutive cricket titles from 1958-1959 to 1960-1961. In 1960, after the college took over, the Physical Education and Sports Department had prepared grounds for sports like Kabaddi, Basketball etc. Every year the college teams were champions in cricket, swimming, football, basketball, volleyball, handball, hockey and Athletics. Basketball in 1962-63, Swimming in 1963-64, Kho-Kho (Men) from 1964-65 to 1973-74 for 9 consecutive years from 1964-65 to 1973-74 and 6 consecutive years from 1986-87 to 1991-92. Became champion.
   Hand-ball was introduced in 1979–80 and the men's team was runner-up in 1981–82 and 1982–83 and champion for three consecutive years from 1983–84 to 1985–86. It is a matter of pride that our college won the Nagpur University General Championship for 5 consecutive years from 1986-87 to 1990-91. The college team won the University Championship in Handball (Women) for 9 consecutive years from 1986-87 to 1994-95. Handball Boys 2005-06 to 2008-09 for four consecutive years, Yoga Boys 2000-01 to 2005-06. and 2011-12 to 2018-19 years 6 and 8 titles, cross country girls 2009-10 to 2012-13 and boys 2007-08 to 2009-10 titles, athletics girls 1010-11 to 2012-13 titles .
   Since the inception of our college, sports activities have been making the college famous. We have won Nagpur University titles time to time in cricket, kho-kho, handball, volleyball, hockey, football, basketball, badminton, kabaddi, swimming, wrestling, cross-country and softball, baseball, korfball etc. in athletics.
   It is only because of the hard work of our players, proper training given by the teachers to the players, moral support of the heads of physical education and sports department, able guidance of our principal and last but not the least enthusiastic efforts that we have been able to retain the general title for five consecutive years. Many players of our college are selected for intervarsity, national and international competitions.
   Our sportsperson who was honored with Chhatrapati Award for her substantial contribution in her respective sports activities. Bhavna Waghale (Football) Ms. Sonal Kawade (Basketball), Shri. Dilip Shahare (Cycle Pole), Shri. Praveen Sorte (Paraplegic), Shri. AD Bhadange (Volleyball) and Shri. Vivek Deshpande (Volleyball).
   Expert in Yoga Shastra Shri. We feel warm to mention the name of Vitthalrao Jibhkate, who was a student of our college and received his Ph.D. At the age of 72, Nagpur University honored him with the state government's Chhatrapati Award in Yoga. It would also be a matter of pride to mention the name of our student Ganesh Kohle, who has been honored with the Chhatrapati Award by the State Government for his excellence in wrestling.
   The State Government awarded Mr. Sitaramji Bhotmange with Dadoji Konddev, the state's highest award in the field of sports, for his outstanding achievements in handball and for training and producing international players. Originally Bhotmange was a wrestler when he was a student of our college.
   Many of our sportspersons got placements in state and central government through sports quota. Nowadays many players are Railways, W.C.L., Attorney General's Office, M.S.E.B. Serving in Many of them have become teachers, lecturers, principals, sports teachers in schools and colleges. Some of them are serving the government as coaches in various sports while others have started clubs and have produced excellent players in various sports with proper training.
   Mr. P. P. Kulkarni, Mrs. Indutai Bhore, Mr.Vithalrao Bhore, Mr. MG Phuke Department of Physical Education and Sports and teachers from other departments like Mr. S. N. Patil, Mr. Aslam, Mr. Hamza, Mr. Jiwaji, Mr. Kadrekar made major contributions in Kho-Kho, Hockey, Football, Volleyball and Cricket respectively.
   In 2016, an indoor stadium was constructed in the college with the efforts of the then Principal Dr. Babanrao Taiwade to provide the students with the latest sports facilities and to perform well at the national and international levels. Four badminton courts, table tennis hall, gym, chess hall and spacious office were built in this stadium.
   Today the college has an excellent football ground, a cement basketball court and a separate cricket ground with side wickets. Dr Punjabrao Deshmukh Sports Academy is run by the Sports Department to provide all these facilities to the students of the society. It provides training in cricket, football, badminton, table tennis, chess, gymnastics. Almost 500 players are getting training in this every day
   Especially Dr. Punjabrao Deshmukh Sports Festival is organized since 2000. Inter-collegiate Kabaddi, Volleyball, Football, Basketball, Cricket, Badminton, Chess, Table Tennis and Korfball competitions are held in this.
   Staff Members and Their Contribution
1. Mr. P.P. Kulkarni - He was appointed in the department in 1949 and headed it in proper direction. His monumental efforts resulted into fame and glory of the college and in that span the college was holding General Championship of Nagpur University continuous five years.

2. Mrs. Indutai Bhore - She served in the college from 1963 to 1999, and was herself hockey-player. She participated in the matches at University as well as national level, and represented Nagpur University too. Under her able guidance the college had won championship for 9 years. She headed the department from 1985 till her retirement.

3. Mr. Vitthalrao Bhore - He was in the department from 1969 to 1996, well known as the player of 'Kusti' and 'Football'. In his tenure, the college had prospered in various games and retained championship.

4. Mr. M.G. Fukey – He was appointed in the department on 17.9.88 as a teacher of physical education in Junior College. In senior college he got appointed as a lecturer of physical education in 1994 and took charge as head in July 1999. He is a Kho-Kho player. He has a lion's share in the overall development of the department. He retired in February 2008.

5. Mrs.Vandana Ingle - She served in the college from 24th July 2000 to August 2008 as a lecturer, and was herself hockey-player and played National. She looks after women teams. Under her able guidance this year our college team won championship in football (Women). She Mitch-vial transfer in Science College

6. Ms. M. R. Shitoot - Before joining this college, she served as a Head of Department of physical education & Sports in Science College, Nagpur from 9th March 1984 to August 2008, and joined this college on August 2008. She is a specialist in Yogasana and Kho-Kho. And represented Kho-Kho & Athletic State & National/ Inter-university. She takes keen interest in coaching players in various games.

   The Department had organized, from 1975; Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Memorial Inter-Collegiate Contest in Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, Volleyball (Men and Women) at Vasant Nagar Ground and many college teams participated. Since 1980, contests were not held.

   The college had revitalized the tradition by organizing Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krida Mahotsava from 2000 which runs for 3 days and includes Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, Volleyball, Basketball, Football and Cricket.

   Well-equipped Gymnasium was opened in the college on 9th July 2001 with the funding of Central Government. As we provide many facilities to the players, our college has become a centre of attraction for them. With spirit and enthusiasm they play for name & fame of both individual & the college.

   UGC sponsored National Conference on ‘Role of Yoga in Modern Life’ on March 3-4, 2006.

Teachers presently working in the department:

1. Mr. D. C. Wankhade – Head of the Department
   Before joining this college, he served as a physical education teacher in Navodaya Vidyalaya Samittee, Bhopal region from 16th Jan. 1996 to 10th April 1998, and joined this college on 11th of April 1998 as a lecturer of physical education. He is a specialist in Yogasana and ball-badminton in which he represented university. He is the gold medalist and first merit in M.P.Ed Examination of Amravati University. He takes keen interest in coaching players in various games.

2. Mr. S. S. Dadhe -    Before joining this college, he served as a physical education Director in Shri Shivaji College, Chikhali, & transfer in this college on July 2008.

3. Mrs. Vandana Ingle -    She has been working as a lecturer in the college from 24 July 2000 to August 2008 and now since 2015 and was herself hockey-player and played National. She looks after women teams. Under her able guidance, many women's teams of our college won championships in different sports.

In addition to the sports teachers, a sports council is formed for the smooth working of sports activities. The following are the members of the Sports Council for the year 2010-2011.
